Ongoing membership requirements for professional, clinical members and supervisors

Ongoing membership requirements

Professional members

As an AHA Professional member you will be able to find association documentation such as the Articles of Association, the AHA's Ethics policy, and other guidelines and policies under the "Policies, procedures and guidelines for members" section of the AHA website members area.  CPD / supervision record cards and professional log books are available in the membership documents area.

It is a requirement of your membership that you must meet your supervision and CPD requirements. If this does not happen a letter of explanation will be requested and if none is forthcoming, your membership will be suspended until your requirements are met.

The AHA's membership year runs from the 1st of April to the 31st of March and renewal is required regardless of the joining date.  If membership begins during the membership year then membership requirements are calculated on a pro rata basis as follows:  1 point per month for supervision; 1.666 points per month for CPD.

The requirements for a full year of membership are 20 points of CPD and either 12 one on one supervision hours OR six one on one supervision hours with the remaining six sessions to be done in a peer/group supervision setting with a qualified supervisor present.  Please note: Group supervision will almost always be of 2 hours duration to allow all present adequate time.  The expected hours of supervision for group will therefore be 12 hours over the 6 sessions.  The basic rule of thumb is that supervision is to be attended on a monthly basis.

Supervision

CPD/Supervision card to be completed. Please note that all supervision is to show date / duration / type of supervision (individual, group or peer) and signed by your supervisor / peer group participant (not yourself).  A letter from your supervisor will also be accepted providing it contains the above information and is signed.  An email will also be accepted as long as the email from the supervisor is forwarded intact to AHA admin showing who it came from and on what date.

Supervisors are listed here or you may prefer to contact your State Membership & Peer group Coordinator for further information regarding which supervisors and / or groups may have a vacancy. All state committee details can be found here.

If you are unable to find a supervisor in your area you may prefer to conduct your supervision via Skype or phone and thus contact a supervisor anywhere in Australia.

Continuing education (CPD)

All CPD must be third party verified - that is your CPD must be verified with either certificates, receipts, copies of advertising etc.  Please note that advertising material must contain your name and content of presentation (screenshots of social media posts are not considered evidence).  Your CPD record card shows that the point value for all hypnotherapy related CPD is 1 point per hour and non hypnotherapy related CPD attracts half a point per hour.  Please take the time to read what is applicable for CPD and what is not.

Excess CPD can be carried over to the following membership year (one year limit only).

Some points to note:

  • Hypnotherapy related CPD attracts one point per hour (to a cap of 10 points to encourage diversity in ongoing training)

  • Non hypnotherapy related training attracts half a point per hour (to a cap of 10 points to encourage diversity in ongoing training)

  • All AHA training / workshops attract one point per hour of attendance and will be recorded on your profile CPD log (no evidence required to be submitted).

It is required that all members attend a minimum of 2 AHA general meetings and workshops per year.

First aid, insurance and police checks

  • First aid must be renewed every 3 years.  It is not necessary to do CPR every year.

  • Police checks must be renewed every 3 years.

  • Working with children checks must be renewed prior to stated expiry.

  • Insurance must be renewed every year.   Health care funds require a Public Liability Policy and a Professional Indemnity Policy as a Hypnotherapist for an Indemnity amount of no less than $2,000,000 Professional Indemnity Insurance Cover and a $10,000,000 Public Liability Insurance cover.

Once renewed document or certificate has been received, please email directly to administrator@ahahypnotherapy.org.au.

Log book for upgrade to clinical membership

Clinical membership is granted once you obtain 500 hours of one on one sessions with clients and obtain one year of supervision with an AHA qualified supervisor.

You are required to keep a record of all client sessions (family, friends and practice people can also be counted) in the professional members logbook in consultation with your supervisor.  Once you have reached 500 client hours, you are eligible to upgrade to clinical by simply providing your log book and a letter from your supervisor stating that they are aware that you have seen 500 clients and are ready to upgrade to clinical status.  These two documents are to be emailed to administrator@ahahypnotherapy.org.au.

CPD/Supervision is pro-rata to the date that you have joined and must be submitted on the 31st of March each year for your renewal.  It is a requirement for Professional members that you attend a minimum of 6 one on one supervision sessions per year while the remaining 6 sessions can be completed in a peer group as long as that peer group has a qualified supervisor present.  You are, of course, free to complete the whole 12 supervision sessions one on one if that is your preference.

Clinical members

The above supervision, CPD and documentation requirements also apply to clinical members.  The only exception to the above professional criteria is that clinical members have a choice with supervision in that they can complete 12 one on one supervision sessions OR 12 peer group sessions (which would equal 24 hours as peer groups run for 2 hours to ensure everyone is catered for) per year OR a combination of both.  Supervision of some kind is to be attended monthly.
