The Neurology of Horror: Why hypnosis is the perfect trauma treatment

About Frederic Mau:

Dr. Fredric Mau was the opening keynote speaker at the 70th Anniversary Australian Hypnotherapists Association 2019 World Conference in Brisbane. That same year he was named Outstanding Counselor by the South Carolina Counseling Association. He has received awards in the US and Europe for his careful research on the neurology of hypnosis.

Dr. Mau is the author of three books (links below), and is board certified in three areas, as a National Certified Counselor, TeleMental Health provider, and Hypnotherapist. He created Relaxation-Based Pain Relief, a standard-of-care clinical protocol for nonpharmacological pain relief, to give physicians and other clinicians practical tools to use these powerful processes to help hurting patients and clients. He is a clinical mental health counselor in private practice in Columbia, South Carolina, USA, and treats trauma as well as anxiety, depression, functional neurological disorders, and other mental health issues.

The training:

Unlike waking state conversation, hypnosis engages limbic structures of the brain which are involved in the formation of trauma and the elimination of posttraumatic responses.

A hundred years ago Pierre Janet, one of the founders of modern psychology, developed the concepts of dissociation and the subconscious. Hypnosis involves a disengagement of the frontal temporal lobe - the seat of conscious thought, and an engagement of the limbic system, including the anterior cingulate cortex, a structure particularly involved in creating dissociation and modifying emotions of horror, and is particularly suited to eliminating posttraumatic responses.

Objectives

  • Participants will be able to describe the neurological responses responsible for the formation of posttraumatic reactions.

  • Participants will be able to apply this knowledge in the treatment of trauma clients.

  • Participants will be able to distinguish between waking state and relaxed state approaches to trauma treatment.

  • Participants will be able to describe the social construction of posttraumatic symptoms.
