National Register of Hypnotherapists

The benefits of using a hypnotherapist from the National Register:

The National register is the official National Register of the Australian Hypnotherapists Association, the peak body for hypnotherapists in Australia.

The AHA, as the oldest and largest hypnotherapy association in Australia, is recognised as the voice of hypnotherapy by Federal and State governments and by the private health funds as well as numerous other stakeholders. (The AHA is the only hypnotherapy association that has been assessed as meeting the 2008 Private Health Insurance Fund standards).

Each AHA member complies with the AHA's strict Code of Conduct as well as complying with the requirements of the Private Health Insurance (Accreditation) Rules 2008 that state that the health care provider, providing the treatment, must be a member of a professional organisation which covers them for that type of treatment and which:

  1.  is a national entity which has membership requirements for the profession; and

  2.  provides assessment of the health care provider in terms of the appropriate level of
training and education required to practise in that profession; and

  3.  administers a continuing professional development scheme in which the health care
provider is required, as a condition of membership, to participate; and

  4. maintains a code of conduct which the health care provider must uphold in order to continue to be a member; and

  5. maintains a formal disciplinary procedure, which includes a process to suspend or expel members, and an appropriate complaints resolution procedure.

The benefits of using a hypnotherapist from the National Register:

The most important benefit from your perspective is that to be on the National Register, hypnotherapists have to meet the high standards set by the AHA in terms of original training, Code of Conduct and ongoing professional educational development AHA members have to follow guidelines about professional conduct, responsibilities and confidentiality that are set out in the AHA Code of Ethics. AHA hypnotherapists also have the benefit of the Association and its supervisors to help them with their work and continuing professional development. AHA therapists bring the benefit of this support to the work they do with their clients - you.

For the nearest qualified and accredited therapist in your area please contact the Free Advisory Line on: 1800 067 557.

Alternatively, click on the relevant state name below and feel free to contact
a clinical member of the Australian Hypnotherapists' Association in your state. To assist you in your search, for a registered, fully qualifies hypnotherapist, in each state the AHA clinical members have been listed by location in alphabetical order. All AHA members are more than happy to answer any of your enquiries. However please let them know that "you found her/him on the AHA website."

The National Register is a public document that lists hypnotherapists throughout Australia who have signed an agreement to meet the National guidelines implemented by the AHA. These hypnotherapists have chosen to seek registration with the AHA, and in the process, be audited by the AHA as to their eligibility for placement on the National Register.

The National Register is the largest register for hypnotherapists in Australia. Entry onto the National Register requires the highest standards be met in the Hypnotherapy profession. Entry onto the National Register requires each hypnotherapist to apply individually to the AHA and is not available to any hypnotherapist unless their supporting documents are first checked and sighted by an authorised AHA Executive member. These guidelines are consistent with and in many cases higher than other similar Peak Professional Bodies in America, UK, New Zealand and Asia.

  • All AHA Registered Hypnotherapists have agreed to:
  • Meet AHA Professional Supervision requirements
  • Meet AHA Ongoing Professional Development requirements
  • Abide by the AHA Code of Conduct/Ethics
  • Adhere to the outcomes of the AHA Complaints Board
  • Meet mandatory annual renewal requirements
  • Abide by the AHA Complaints Procedures
  • Be accountable to the public through the AHA
  • Supply documentary evidence to support membership requirements
  • Meet the National Register eligibility requirements
  • Have their names placed on the National Register

Any member of the public who wishes to verify the registration of a hypnotherapist or seek further information can ring the AHA National Office on the Free advisory line 1800 067 557 between the hours of 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

Frequently asked questions

What is required for a hypnotherapist to be placed on the National Register?

All Registered Hypnotherapists must individually complete a membership application form, and supply supporting documents and meet entry requirements to the AHA before being considered eligible for registration. The AHA holds an electronic and paper file on each registered hypnotherapist to meet auditing requirements.

Hypnotherapists will not meet registration requirements on the single basis of having membership to another professional body. Only hypnotherapists whose qualifications and eligibility criteria that have been established through the sighting of supporting documents supplied to the AHA are placed on the National Register. Only full financial members of the AHA are eligible for registration on the National Register.

Why is a National Register necessary?

The only way a member of the public can be assured that their practitioner is accountable is through registration. Members of the public who seek hypnotherapy services need to be assured that the hypnotherapist they are seeking these services from is accountable and indeed qualified to be offering such a service.

In Australia hypnotherapists are not required by law to meet any mandatory or national standards of training or registration. Therefore, a person may claim to be a hypnotherapist without any appropriate training. Such people are more likely to make your condition worse or even use a client’s vulnerability to meet their own agenda without being able to be held accountable. The only way the public can protect themselves against poor practices is through seeking services from registered professionals.

There may also be times when a client may not be happy with the service they have received from a hypnotherapist. If the hypnotherapist is not registered then avenues of redress are limited. However, if the hypnotherapist is registered, a formal complaint can be made to the Complaints Board of the AHA. Outcomes of a complaint can lead to deregistration.
