Welcome to the Australian Hypnotherapists' Association
Providing the
endorsement of your hypnotherapy skills that clients are
looking for.
Not just another
professional body
The AHA is the National Registration
Body for hypnotherapists and has been the peak body for
hypnotherapy and hypnotherapists since 1949. Registration with
such a
professional body reflects a hypnotherapist’s willingness to
demonstrate to the public a strong desire to be accountable.
Registration is the only formal process that members of the
public can rely on in relation to standards and
accountability. Therefore, if you are looking for a
professional Hypnotherapy Association to join... then this
is the one. Not only is the AHA the oldest Hypnotherapy
Association in Australia, it is also the largest independent
Hypnotherapy Association in Australia. The AHA is the voice
for professional hypnotherapists.
The Department of Health and Aging,
has actively encouraged the AHA and some of the other
associations to continue its work together towards promoting
the status of Voluntary Self-regulation (VSR) for the
hypnotherapy profession. In this regard, the AHA is
currently participating, along with other professional
bodies, in establishing a Working Group for Hypnotherapy
Self-Regulation. The WGFHSR purpose is to explore ways in
which the industry may progress towards Voluntary
Self-regulation.
The AHA's primary responsibility is
for the ongoing registration of individual practitioners and
setting the criteria for the validation of Recognised
Training Courses. The AHA is proudly independent and does
not have a direct relationship with any one
particular teaching institution.
So what does that mean? It means that we
evaluate our members by their academic output and not just because they have
done a course by the school that has established an association just
to accredit its own students.
Therefore as the oldest and largest independent
Hypnosis Association in Australia, if you are an Australian
or International hypnotherapist (or a school looking
for a professional Association for your students) and wish
to become a member please contact the national membership
secretary Megan Davenport on (02) 9484 1461 or the AHA Free
Advisory line 1800 067 557.
AHA members are trained, examined and sworn to
maintain the highest standards and ethics. The Australian Hypnotherapists

How can you become a member of the AHA?
To be a member of the
Australian Hypnotherapists' Association, it does not matter where you learnt -
what matters is that you are able to show the Board that you are properly
trained and know your hypnosis. Prospective members are examined in the relevant
areas of hypnotherapy including, psychology and counselling as well as the
clinical applications of hypnotherapy. Prospective members also need to pass a
psychological assessment to protect the public by ensuring that they are
suitable persons to carry out therapy. Then once accepted as members, they are
required to enter into a supervisory relationship with an experienced
supervisor throughout their period of membership. All members are sworn to
uphold the professional and ethical standards of the AHA as they are set out in
the Association's Code of Ethics.

Prospectus and
Application

What is the AHA?
The Australian
Hypnotherapists' Association came about by a small group of clinical
hypnotherapists who had already been practicing for a number of years and who
came together because they were determined to set high ethical and professional
standards for the hypnotherapy profession in Australia. They searched each other
out to support each other and share their knowledge. That happened in 1949 and
AHA members have been continuing this practice of sharing their knowledge ever
since....
The AHA is administered by a Board of Directors,
elected each year by the members. The Board includes professional
hypnotherapists, counsellors, registered nurses, health care workers and psychologists who are
actively involved in clinical hypnotherapy.
The AHA has steadily grown in membership and now has members in nearly
every state of Australia and as far a field as New Zealand; Russia; Thailand,
Hong Kong and London.
Members of the AHA come from many nationality
backgrounds, making a wide range of languages available for clients seeking
hypnotherapy. The range of languages spoken include: Arabic, French, Cantonese,
Dutch, Greek, German, Hebrew, Italian, Mandarin, Polish, Russian, and Spanish.
The AHA is in complete
agreement with the medical profession in its opposition to the type of
'hypnotist' who makes wild and exaggerated claims. A Hypnotherapist who is a
member of the Australian Hypnotherapists' Association is governed by a sworn
code of ethics to take the deepest possible interest in every patient, to be at
all times conscientious, persevering, kind, patient, thorough and trustworthy
and to treat all information acquired during treatment as highly confidential.
